Terpenes A Closer Look At Geranyl Acetate

Geranyl Acetate is a terpene found in citronella, lemongrass, carrots, coriander, fig, orange flower, neroli, thyme, celery, geranium, sassafras and some strains of cannabis.

The aroma is floral with fruity undertones.

Benefits of Geranyl Acetate

Oils containing Geranyl Acetate have been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of digestive issues. They also utilized the oil for treatment of swelling which would indicate they discovered it has anti inflammatory benefits.

Like the terpene Bisabolol, Geranyl Acetate was also discovered to be a very powerful terpene with anti bacterial, anti viral and antimicrobial properties. This make the terpene a possible treatment in bacterial and fungal infections like Athlete’s Foot, Candida Albicans as well as staph aureus, the cause of Staph infections.

In one study it was found that the terpene acted as an anti cancer.  It was found to attack cancer cells and induced cancer cell death.

One study showed that Geranyl Acetate in high doses presented some analgesic effects.

There are minimal studies currently on the terpene, any new discoveries will be included in real time.

Other Places You Find Geranyl Acetate

Because Geranyl Acetate has been found in over 60 different essential oils it is a very commonly used ingredient.

It can be found extensively in the personal care products space. From perfumes, soaps, cosmetics, lotions and deodorant, that floral scent you smell is from Geranyl Acetate. It is that floral scent that makes it a natural option for cleaning products like laundry detergent.

As it is also found in many foods, Geranyl Acetate is used in the food industry as a flavouring agent to enhance sweet, berry floral and spice notes.
